An Australian study published in the New England Journal of Medicine involving 127 babies with cystic fibrosis showed that those with neutrophil elastase activity in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid at an early age were more likely to have early bronchiectasis. Researchers said that the prevalence of the respiratory problem rose as the babies aged, from nearly 30% at 3 months of age to 61.5% at 3 years.
