Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., called on lawmakers to settle on a permanent replacement for the Medicare sustainable growth rate formula, noting revised cost estimates of doing so provide "a window of opportunity." Baucus acknowledged the efforts of physicians societies to develop new payment ideas, saying he wants to see "short-term, ready-to-go solutions" that would pave the way for replacing the SGR this year and move the health care system away from fee-for-service models to a value-based system.
