China's National Health and Family Planning Commission announced plans to strengthen oversight of antibiotic use in hospitals and in prescriptions in an attempt to reduce the growth of drug-resistant disease. The new guidelines authorize use of 50 types of antibiotics for top-level hospitals and 35 at second-level facilities. The commission estimates that, on average, the amount of antibiotics used per person is about 10 times higher in China than in the U.S.
