Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital have altered a device originally designed to spot cancer biomarkers in blood or tissue samples to be used in the rapid detection of tuberculosis and other infectious diseases, as well as in identifying the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The portable device, which combines nuclear magnetic resonance with microfluidic technology, could be used to guide clinical decisions about antibiotic prescriptions, one researcher said.
