The National Science Foundation and the Institute of Education Sciences have issued a set of common guidelines for federally funded education research intended to improve the quality and usefulness of scholarly work. The guidelines include the type of evidence needed and how the work contributes to existing knowledge. "We're under more constrained federal resources, and that provides a powerful impetus for collaborating and building purposefully on each other's portfolios and investments," said Janice M. Earle, the NSF's education-evaluations coordinator.
