Companies need to be nimble to guard sensitive information such as research databases and noncentralized data repositories, said Larry Brock, former chief information security officer at DuPont. "It's very difficult to determine where the next breakthrough is going to come from; the breakthrough in business unit A may come from something that business unit B discovered in the way certain polymers and processes are being used," he said. Brock recommends using multifactor authentication and "out-of-band" technology.
