Clinical trials of prosthetic implants will begin within the next year at a Veterans Affairs medical center in Salt Lake City, the first place in the U.S. to use the technology. In the procedure, doctors implant a titanium rod in an amputee's residual bone, inserting a second post about six weeks later that extends beyond the skin so a prosthetic limb can be attached to it. While new to the U.S., the procedure has been done in Europe, Australia and Africa.
