Florida Polytechnic University has scrapped tenure and will, instead, offer faculty contracts of fixed lengths of one, three or five years, it was announced this week. Renewal would be based on performance, school officials said. The school, formerly known as the University of South Florida Polytechnic, will begin offering classes next year with its accreditation pending. State union members say they doubt the college will attract high-caliber faculty without offering tenure.
