Scientists hope a study of fruit flies might pinpoint the gene for cannibalism. Biologists at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, found that food shortages caused some young larvae to attack older or wounded larvae. After 118 generations with severe food shortages, the flies swarmed their fellows even more aggressively. "It's an easy source of protein, I suppose," said biologist Roshan Vijendravarma.
