Japanese scientists have identified a gene associated with the susceptibility of individuals between the ages of 10 and 18 to developing adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Approximately 30% of AIS patients have some family history of scoliosis, which primarily affects those of Asian and Caucasian descent. Researchers from the RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences in Japan conducted the research in the hopes of understanding how the condition develops.
