Men with mutations in the FTO gene were up to 1.87 times more likely to gain excess weight than those without it, a study indicated. Researchers also found women who carried a matrix metalloproteinase-2 variant had a more than twofold increased risk of obesity over a 10-year period than those without the variant. The results were presented at the 20th European Congress on Obesity.
