Green roofs might be able to help restore the population of native plants, according to Clark DeLong, a botanist based at the Plant Science and Landscape Architecture department at the University of Maryland. Some habitats in the Mid-Atlantic resemble the conditions of the green roof, which could be used to cultivate native plants and keep them protected, DeLong said. The capacity for conservation could be added to the long list of benefits derived from green roofs, he added.
