Research indicates that the top 5% of performers produce more than four times what other employees do, but they also pay off in terms of making better quality referrals, John Sullivan writes. He recommends several actions for improving employee referral programs, such as waiting 6 to 12 months to see whether a new hire pans out before awarding a bonus to a worker who referred the hire.
