The number of emergency department visits involving children aged 5 and younger who suffered from hydrocarbon-related injuries dropped from 19.5 for every 100,000 visits in 2000 to 13.8 in 2009, a study in the journal Pediatrics showed. Most injuries happened during the summer months and involved 1- to 2-year-olds.
