Leptospirosis, a potentially deadly zoonotic disease caused by a spirochete bacterium, infects a number of species including raccoons, skunks, and foxes, and it can be transmitted to people and pets via contact with infected urine and other bodily fluids, veterinarian Kathy Gagliardi writes.
