Farmers and producers in Maine's Washington County have joined a growing initiative in the state and New England region aimed at increasing local food production and promoting healthier eating. The goal is for six New England states to garner the ability to meet the majority of their own food needs within the next 50 years. "The difference between this and attempts in the past is that Maine now has a network of diverse consumers, farms and the assistance of the Maine Department of Agriculture," said Tanya Swain of the Western Mountain Alliance.
