Martha's Vineyard, Mass., social studies teachers Elaine Weintraub and Brian Scott recently led a group of high-school sophomores along what is known as the African-American Heritage Trail, which traces 25 key places and events on the island. Before venturing out for a first-hand look at the trail, students spent time in the classroom reviewing archival resources, such as census reports, newspaper archives and birth and death records.
