Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, has directed the agency to begin researching a more objective method for diagnosing mental-health disorders than the clinical-based criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Insel wrote in a recent blog post that NIMH has launched Research Domain Criteria, which will seek to apply current cognitive science to develop diagnostic methods using scans, genetics and other tools.
