While student achievement has improved in Mississippi, educators and experts say schools continue to face various challenges, including poverty among students. In the Clarksdale district, officials plan to adopt a more rigorous high-school curriculum starting in the fall after the completion of a pilot program that involved 40 students. Superintendent Dennis Dupree has helped design a new scoring system for grade schools statewide, and joined an effort to institute a performance-pay system for teachers that could become a model for the state.
