Mosquitoes carrying the deadly malaria parasite are three times more likely to be attracted to humans. Researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine used smelly stockings to test their theory, and they said the parasite enhances its host's sense of smell. "If we know how the parasite is able to manipulate the olfactory system... perhaps we can identify new attractants for infected mosquitoes and we will be able to increase our efficiency with trapping techniques," said researcher James Logan.
