New lithium-ion batteries that are set to be delivered to the International Space Station are safe, NASA says, despite an incident in which such batteries overheated and caught fire on a 787 jet. The space batteries are larger and less likely to fail, NASA says, and will undergo stringent testing. The batteries will replace less-efficient nickel-hydrogen batteries in the station.
