An antimicrobial stewardship program in four NICUs eliminated some, but not all, instances of antibiotic use that could be considered inappropriate, according to findings presented at a meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies. "Although total antibiotic use was unchanged, we may have decreased selective pressure due to decreased redundant use -- the use of two drugs from the same drug class -- and the unwarranted use of broad spectrum antibiotics," Dr. Sameer Patel of Columbia University Medical Center said.
