Dr. Susan Partovi of the University of California, Los Angeles, writes about a patient with esophageal cancer whose family did not want him to know the details of his treatment or whether his condition was terminal, which it was. The man's wife feared that if he knew he would lose his will to live. Partovi was troubled by the omission and wasn't sure what to do until the patient himself said he did not want to know whether he was dying.
