A study published in the American Journal of Roentgenology has found that an 18F-FDG-PET/CT scan that is positive for breast cancer metastasis to internal mammary lymph nodes can signal "malignant involvement on ultrasound-guided FNA [fine-needle aspiration]." The researchers also said "the presences of high tumor grade, [lymphovascular invasion], or triple receptor-negative status are risk factors for IM node positivity on 18F-FDG PET/CT." Identification of breast cancer metastasis to internal mammary lymph nodes may lead to modification in staging and survival prediction, the study suggested.
