FDG-PET/CT has the potential to diagnose and evaluate inflammatory bowel disease, according to a study published in The Journal of Nuclear Medicine. The study observed increased FDG uptake in certain portions of the colon in mice with induced dextran sodium sulfate colitis, findings that correlated with histologic analysis. FDG-PET/CT imaging of 25 patients with Crohn's disease showed elevated FDG uptake in 87% of deep mucosal ulcerations. The scans also identified mild endoscopic lesions in about half of cases.
