Health care providers remain opposed to direct-to-consumer drug ads, according to a poll by CMI/Compas. More than half of the specialists and primary-care doctors polled said drugmakers should reduce DTC advertising, and 18.3% said the practice should end. Significant majorities said DTC ads contribute to a preference for branded drugs over generics, add to health spending and encourage over-use. However, 68% said that DTC ads encourage patients to get in touch with care providers and 48% agreed that DTC ads educate and inform.
