After posting $8.1 billion in profit for the first quarter, Fannie Mae will send $59.4 billion in dividends to the Treasury. The profit should not deter policymakers from focusing on plans to reform the mortgage giants, some say. "It is good news that both Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae are returning money to the taxpayers ... but we now need to move forward on a new secondary market system that includes a larger role for private capital, with a more limited and defined government role," said John Dalton of The Financial Services Roundtable.
