National Guard and Reserve members have filed more than 15,000 complaints since September 2001 alleging employment discrimination, with nearly a third of those complaints directed toward government agencies, according to federal records. The Government Accountability Office has estimated that fewer than a third of service members who are illegally denied jobs file complaints. "If we don't protect [reservists'] civilian jobs ... they aren't going to volunteer and serve," said Sam Wright, director of the Service Members Law Center at the Reserve Officers Association.
