The recent Texas fertilizer-plant explosion doesn't have to mean requiring companies to switch to safer technologies, wrote Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Kan., in a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency. Instead, Pompeo seeks clarification of existing regulations. "The danger with such a vague law is twofold: It leads to overzealous implementation based on discretionary boundaries for enforcement, and it reduces safety because of the confusion as to what processes and chemicals are actually covered," Pompeo wrote to acting EPA Administrator Bob Perciasepe.
