An Office of Inspector General report found that Medicare overpaid by $529 million for anemia drugs given to dialysis patients in 2011. Had U.S. government spending been based on current drug usage levels, which have fallen since 2007, the government would have saved $510 million. A decline in the use of iron deficiency drugs led to an overpayment of $19 million, the report said. CMS is expected to release a proposal this summer to change next year's reimbursement rate.
