The Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday approved an immigration bill after a compromise on H-1B visas was negotiated by Sens. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. The bill softened some requirements included in an earlier version that sought to compel technology firms to make good-faith efforts to hire American workers before resorting to H-1B visas. The AFL-CIO criticized the bill as not going far enough to protect American workers.
