The Senate voted 69-27 to approve the Marketplace Fairness Act, which would order businesses to collect sales tax for Internet sales. President Barack Obama says he would support such a tax, but the Act could face antagonism in the House, Grant Gross writes. The Act would exempt more than 90% of Internet merchants, those that can show less than $1 million of Internet sales. Opponents include the National Taxpayers Union, which calls the Act "really just a way to unleash state tax collectors on the Internet."
