Fifty-eight percent of water samples collected from 161 swimming pools across Atlanta last summer were contaminated with E. coli, CDC researchers wrote in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Since chlorine and other disinfectants do not eliminate germs immediately, it is important for swimmers not to swallow pool water, CDC's Michele Hlavsa said. The agency recommended parents take children on bathroom breaks every hour or check diapers every half an hour to an hour.
