The recession is among the events that have affected Americans' retirement savings, according to an Ameriprise Financial survey. Respondents overall have faced an average of four such events and lost an average of $117,000 from their retirement accounts, while 37% have experienced at least five unexpected events for an average loss of about $144,000, according to the survey. Among the "derailers" most often cited were low interest rates, stock market losses and insufficient home equity.
