A proposal to tie Medicare hospital pay to the timing of patient transfers to hospice could lead to patients spending more time than is needed in acute care settings, according to an audit report. The HHS Office of the Inspector General is recommending basing some Medicare payments to hospitals on the timing of transfers of patients from hospitals to hospice care. In a response to that recommendation, CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner said that it's not clear the CMS has the authority to enact the change and that the proposal could be undermined if patients remain in acute care longer.
