There has been a rapid decline in birthrates pretty much everywhere around the world except for sub-Saharan Africa, according to an essay by Stanford University geographer Martin Lewis. Lewis examined several factors to determine the cause of the decline and discovered that lower birthrates are correlated with TV ownership and media consumption, writes journalist Brad Plumer in this blog post. Previous studies have also provided evidence for this link, but it is possible that some other factors are at work, Plumer writes.
