U.K. sheep farmers will be among the first to receive Merck & Co.'s new Schmallenberg virus vaccination for their animals. The disease rapidly spread through Europe beginning in 2011, infecting sheep and cattle in eight countries and on at least 2,600 farms. The vaccine, expected to be ready this summer, will be given to animals prior to pregnancy to prevent the stillbirths and severe deformities caused by the virus.
