The Tacoma Public Schools in Washington state this summer will begin a five-year plan to overhaul its special-education programs to make them more inclusive, based on recommendations by the Massachusetts-based Urban Special Education Leadership Collaborative. Educators will attend training during the summer on teaching strategies, preschool classes will be restructured to have a 50-50 ratio of students with and without disabilities, and programs will be moved to allow students to attend neighborhood schools.
