When experiencing burnout, nurses should be empowered to communicate and know they will be heard by their organization, said Dana Nelson-Peterson, administrative director for ambulatory nursing services at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle. In addition to burnout, nurses can suffer from compassion fatigue. It is vital for nurses to care for themselves, said Kelly M. Johnson, vice president and chief nursing officer for Children's Hospital Colorado.
