Among workers who opened a 401(k) savings plan last year, 73% put money exclusively into professionally managed funds, according to Vanguard Group. More than one-third of all 401(k) holders had their funds managed by a professional, a proportion that has doubled in the past five years. "The number of participants completely turning their portfolio construction over to a professional, or obtaining advice from professionals, is an important trend in the potential future financial security of retirees," said Jean Young, senior research analyst at Vanguard's Center for Retirement Research.
