BT Group has named Gavin Patterson, the leader of the telecom's Retail operation, to succeed Ian Livingston as the British telecom's chief executive. The announcement was made Wednesday after Livingston accepted a ministry position with the U.K. government. Livingston was held in high regard by investors for his turnaround efforts during a five-year tenure in which he pared costs and invested heavily in high-speed broadband and broadcasting projects. Patterson, 45, steps in as BT works to launch TV sports ventures in an effort to capture customers from rivals BSkyB and Virgin Media.
