Officials in Chicago Public Schools are planning by the 2014-15 school year to appoint approximately 300 new principals trained to turn around struggling schools. Many of the new leaders are being recruited and trained as part of the district's $10 million Chicago Leadership Collaborative that selects educators for programs offered by one of four partners, including the University of Illinois at Chicago and Teach for America. Among other things, the programs provide yearlong residencies at high-needs schools, professional development and coaching once the principals are placed.
