Geologists say a newly discovered subduction zone off the coast of Portugal may affect the Atlantic Ocean. Subduction zones occur when oceanic crust buckles and sinks into the Earth's mantle, swallowing and killing the ocean. "Fractures will propagate from these areas and ultimately cause the plate to break. We may well be at a turning point of the Atlantic's history," said lead geologist in the study Joao Duarte.
