Researchers looked at data from more than 144,000 statin users and found that those who took clarithromycin or erythromycin were 26% more likely to develop kidney damage than those who took azithromycin. Taking clarithromycin or erythromycin with statins was also associated with a slightly higher risk of hospitalization for muscle damage and death, compared with the group taking azithromycin. The study appears in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
