DIRECTV has bought Pennsylvania-based LifeShield Home Security, becoming the latest pay-TV player to expand its core business and enter the field of home security and automation. DIRECTV said it planned on leveraging LifeShield's self-installed security and monitoring platform to reach out to consumers starting in early 2014. With only 20% of U.S. homes owning security systems, new entrants see plenty of potential upside to the business.
