It may be unrealistic to expect all students to excel under the Common Core State Standards in a traditional classroom setting, suggests Paul Barnwell, who teaches English, creative writing and digital media at Fern Creek Traditional High School in Louisville, Ky. Instead, he writes in this commentary, students should be presented with various options, including technical and vocational lessons -- which are difficult to measure through standardized testing but could be the solution to truly preparing some students for careers.
