Men who ate foods with a high glycemic index experienced an increase in blood glucose levels that was followed by a sharp, rapid decline after four hours, which triggered hunger signals and activated the brain region associated with addiction, a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed. Researchers said the findings suggest that carbohydrate addiction may be a real condition and that reduced intake of foods with a high glycemic index may help reduce the risk of overeating in overweight and obese individuals.
