Google invested in the proposed Atlantic Wind Connection project because the company believes that spending for renewable energy is good business, according to Rick Needham, Google's director for energy and sustainability. Investing directly in renewable-energy projects "allows us to diversify our capital while contributing to a clean energy future," Needham writes. The project's New Jersey segment alone "could carry 3,000 megawatts of offshore wind power, allowing the industry to achieve economies of scale necessary for success, and creating thousands of jobs for New Jersey workers," he writes.
