Representatives from eight health information exchanges recently met with the HIT Policy Committee's privacy team to navigate the thicket of state and federal rules around privacy, specifically "nontargeted" electronic queries for patient data from health care providers. Some exchanges instruct facilities that treat sensitive conditions such as drug use or mental illness not to send patient information at all, while others try to filter out sensitive patient data. "The lack of consistency between state and federal laws has been an ongoing challenge," said Joanna Pardee-Walkingstick, director of an HIE in Oklahoma.
