An analysis of data from the Women's Health Initiative found that postmenopausal women who took calcium and vitamin D supplements plus hormones to treat their menopausal symptoms were about 50% less likely to develop a hip fracture than those who didn't take supplements or hormones. "These results suggest that women taking post-menopausal hormone therapy should also take supplemental calcium and vitamin D," the study team concluded. The findings were reported in the journal Menopause.
